Chapter Three

Randall stared at the body under the sheet. Part of him wanted to move the covering and look at the person beneath the covering. The rest of him wanted to leave well enough alone. Who was under there? He frowned. Come to think of it, how did he get from the men’s shelter with King to wherever he was now? Where was he?

“Hello?” He glared around the room. “Is anyone here?”

“I’m here.” A man rounded the table. “My name is Darryl. It’s nice to meet you. You must be a friend of King? Have you met Chris and Steve? Danny and Eric?”

“Hi.” He blinked. “I think I remember them. I know King.” This guy just showed up and rattled off so many names. “I’m confused. Where am I?”

“I’m in the morgue and you’re in limbo.”

“Limbo?” The only limbo he knew about involved a game and this didn’t feel like a game. Wait. Darryl said something about the morgue. Oh God. “How… What… the morgue?”

“You don’t remember what happened?” Darryl asked. “Nothing?”

He stared at Darryl. “What happened is that I took a piss and this bastard joined me. He pissed on my foot instead of in the urinal and I said watch it. I don’t know what set him off, but he didn’t like my telling him such a thing and he went berserk. I remember pain in my neck.” He touched his throat. If he wasn’t mistaken, there was a hole. He needed a mirror to check, but it sure felt like he had a hole in his neck. “Here.”

Darryl nodded. “Do you remember anything else?”

“I remember King being there.” He wobbled and held onto the counter. “He held me.”

“He did,” Darryl said. “You died in his arms.”

“Died?” He didn’t feel dead. It wasn’t possible. “No. We were having sex and I had to pee. I didn’t die.”

“You did.”

His blood chilled. Died? He wanted to look at the body under the sheet now but couldn’t make his hands work to lift it. “Is… is this me?” He turned his back on the body.

“Not exactly.” Darryl directed him away from the table. “You said your Christmas wish was to be with King, right? You’d gotten a version of it by sleeping with him, but you really wanted to be with him, right?”

“I did, but how do you know?” He’d only told King.

“I have friends at the shelter.”

“King told you?” It didn’t seem like the kind of thing King would share.

“Cal said something.” Darryl scrubbed his hand across his mouth. “King said rescuing you and bringing you back was his wish for Christmas.”

“He did?” No way. “You’re lying.”

“I’m not,” Darryl said. “I have a way for you to get back to him.”

“You do?” Wait. If he was dead, then how was that possible? His brain misfired with too much information. “This is… ludicrous. How?”

“My family has been blessed or cursed -- however you want to look at it -- with a kind of magic. I can give you a second chance at life, but it’s not conventional.
